Eight or twelve, and why the answer is not the discount
One family holds this shelf, in two box sizes of the same basket. The per-bin prices are close enough that the interesting number turns out to be a measurement, not a discount.
Two counts, and the per-bin prices nearly match
8 baskets cost $21.99, which is $2.75 a basket. 12 cost $26.99, or $2.25 a basket. The larger set is cheaper by $0.50 per bin — $6.00 across the whole box. Buying 4 bins you have no use for to collect that is not a saving, so the count to buy is the count that fits, and the cheaper rate ($2.25) is a tiebreaker rather than an argument.
The number that actually decides it
Every count holds the same basket, stated as 10.6 x 7.2 x 3.2 in, and that is the figure to measure against. Side by side the short way, two are 14.4 in across and three are 21.6 in; end to end, two run 21.2 in. A drawer that takes three across but is only 10.6 in deep holds three, not six, and the count you bought stops mattering. Measure the opening first, then pick the box.
What the finish costs
Colour is the whole of the rest of the choice, and it is not free at every count: the box of 8 costs $21.99 in either finish, while the box of 12 runs $26.99 to $29.99. So the finish is cosmetic in one box and a $3.00 decision in the other, which is worth checking before picking a colour and then a count. Elsewhere the same thing is dearer still: the squeegee costs different money in different finishes at one and the same length.
