The shelf is split by where the vessel lives. A square body is not styling: a round jug wastes the depth of a fridge door shelf, a flat side does not. A lid matters for the ones that sit out on a table, and the flip-top exists for the case where one hand is holding a glass. At the top of the range the vessel stops being something you lift at all — a two-gallon jar full of water weighs more than a toddler, so it is poured through a tap and stays where it was put down.
